PNG to ICO Converter

Upload a PNG, pick your sizes, and download a multi-size .ico — free.

A free, focused PNG to ICO converter — drop in a PNG, choose which of the standard 16–256px sizes to embed, and export a single .ico file. No background editing, no padding controls — just a fast conversion. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Why convert a PNG to ICO?

Browsers and operating systems still expect a .ico file for a site's favicon — a single container format that bundles several sizes together so the browser, taskbar, or bookmarks bar can each pick the size they need. A plain PNG only gives you one size; converting to .ico packages multiple resolutions (16px up to 256px) into the one file browsers look for at /favicon.ico.

Choosing which sizes to embed

All six standard sizes are selected by default. 16×16 and 32×32 are what browser tabs and bookmarks actually render at; 48×48 is used for Windows desktop shortcuts; 64, 128, and 256px cover higher-density displays and larger icon contexts. If you only need a website favicon, 16/32/48px alone is enough — just uncheck the rest.

Need more control?

This tool is intentionally single-purpose: PNG in, .ico out, nothing else. If you need to add padding, a background fill, rounded corners, or convert from JPG/WebP/SVG as well, the Favicon Generator covers all of that in one editor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PNG to ICO?

Upload or drag in a PNG. The tool shows a live preview at every standard icon size (16 to 256px) — check the sizes you want embedded and click Download .ico to get a single multi-size .ico file.

What sizes should I include in my .ico?

16×16 and 32×32 cover browser tabs and bookmarks; 48×48 covers Windows desktop shortcuts; 64, 128, and 256px cover larger displays and app icons. For a typical website favicon, 16, 32, and 48px is enough — all sizes are selected by default so you can just uncheck what you don't need.

Does the PNG need to be square?

It doesn't have to be, but square source images convert most predictably — a non-square PNG is scaled to fit each icon size, which can add letterboxing. For the sharpest result, start from a square PNG at 256×256px or larger.

Can I download individual PNG sizes instead of the .ico?

Yes. Each size in the grid has its own PNG download link below the checkbox, so you can grab a single size without building the combined .ico file.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion happens locally in your browser — your PNG never leaves your device, and nothing is stored on a server.
