What does a Pantone converter do?

A Pantone converter takes a hex or RGB value and matches it to the closest of a set of named Pantone spot colors — since hex and RGB are screen color spaces and Pantone's Matching System (PMS) is a proprietary, licensed ink-mixing standard, any hex-to-Pantone match is inherently an approximation. Why this isn't official Pantone matching

How "closest" is measured

The tool uses the "redmean" color distance formula — a weighted variant of Euclidean distance in RGB space that adjusts each channel's weight based on the overall redness of the two colors being compared. It's a well-established, low-cost approximation of human color perception, noticeably more accurate than plain unweighted RGB distance while still being fast to compute.
