What does converting to grayscale do?
Converting to grayscale removes color information from an image, leaving only luminance — how light or dark each pixel is — expressed as shades of gray. It's the digital equivalent of a black-and-white photograph, and remains one of the most common photo effects for a classic, timeless, or moody look.
Full grayscale vs partial intensity
At 100% intensity, the image becomes fully black-and-white — the classic look. Lower intensities blend the grayscale version back toward the original color, producing a muted, partially desaturated effect that's sometimes more flattering for portraits or product photos than a full conversion.
Grayscale vs true black-and-white
What people usually mean by "black and white photo" is actually grayscale — a full spectrum of gray tones based on each pixel's brightness. True black-and-white, where every pixel is forced to pure black or pure white with no gray in between, is a much more extreme effect (sometimes called thresholding or 1-bit conversion) and looks quite different — closer to a high-contrast line drawing than a photograph.
